Pilobolus: Summer 2024 Season

"Memory" brought back “Untitled,” a masterpiece from 1978.  This work had everything that made Pilobolus the world class dance troupe it became. Choreographed by Pilobolus founders Robby Barnett, Alison Chase, Martha Clarke, Moses Pendleton, Michael Tracy and Jonathan Wolken, and using disarmingly and misleadingly pleasant music by Robert Dennis, “Untitled” began with two women (Feliz and Klinkman) wearing ornate 19th century dresses as they lay on the ground having a pleasant picnic. (Costumes by Kitty Daly and Malcolm McCormick.) As they rose they slowly grew into giants, their legs clearly those of men.  These now eight-foot tall women moved gracefully about soon joined by two fully dressed men (Loman and Langford) who flirt with them.  As the two ladies were lowered onto their own legs, their supporters proved to be two naked men (Chaparro and Ellis), a bit of a shock to the audience, softened by the beauty of the two.  The two women wafted about blissfully unaware of the four men until the naked men resumed their positions under the women’s skirts as they floated off. This combination of period nicety, nudity and psychology and superb movement made for a hauntingly memorable work. [more]

Momix: Fall 2023 Season

How the ten dancers of Momix create so many beautiful and mysterious images is a credit to artistic director Moses Pendleton and his associate Cynthia Quinn who, along with the dancers, create superb eye candy illusions.  In fact, the performers of Momix are billed as dancer-illusionists. This season at the company’s New York headquarters, the Joyce Theater, sadly, there was only one new work, “Floating.”  Instead, the program, entitled “Viva Momix,” consisted of sixteen oldies-but-goodies all staged with Momix’s signature expertise. Momix’s Alice

Pendleton, in a program note, assures us that "Alice" is not a retelling of Carroll’s book.  Rather, he used some of the events and characters from the book, dividing the evening-length work into twenty-two sections with titles like “A Summer Day,” “A Trip of Rabbits,” “The Cheshire Cat,” “The Queen of Diamonds” and “The Wolf-Spied-Her.”  Although characters reappear—Alice, the Rabbits and the various playing cards queens—the episodes don’t particularly flow one into the other.  The takeaway is a series of fanciful images rather than a cogent whole work of theater. MOMIX: 2018 Season

It’s easy to see why MOMIX is one of the most popular dance troupes in the world.  Beauty, strength, ingenuity combine in often ingenious choreography.  A generous program of short works that range from raunchy to sensual to dreamy is pulling in audiences at the Joyce Theater where MOMIX regularly plies its colorful wares. The repertoire this season was handpicked from a smorgasbord of several previous programs, but also included a impressive new work called “Paper Trails.”  [more]

In eighteen short sections, Pendleton and his dancers evoke images of the western deserts of the U.S., using whatever means necessary, be it skateboards, puppetry, classical Indian dance, acrobatics, technological gimmickry or a truckload of imaginative costumes. [more]

Momix: Alchemia

The suite of discrete scenes, distinguished by quasi-poetic lines in the program notes and a series of obvious theatrical gimmicks—tall columns that become ancient weapons; ultra-violet light revealing intricate patterns of blood vessels; women gliding about in floor-length gowns that later cocoon them; young lovers floating about each other; mirrored booths that confuse who is where; etc.—paints a vivid portrait of a constantly shifting land populated by gorgeous creatures dressed in astounding costumes by Phoebe Katzin.
